Rower Silhouette

Through all four years of high school, I was on the crew team as a coxswain. There were times where, for whatever reason, I was in the coach's launch instead of a shell for practice. This came from one of those times. I was going to miss the next regatta so the coach wanted to get the boat used to a new coxswain.

Artistically speaking, the rower's upper torso sits at one of the thirds-points. The boat follows close to the lower thirds-line and the oar pulls you into the shot. In addition to the rule of thirds, triangles tend to be compositionally powerful. The (approximate) triangle here would be the oar, to the rowers torso, to the top-left corner of the frame. The photo is basically monotone, with the sun reflecting off the water. However, the red of this rower's shorts and some blue on the oar come out. The short exposure time allowed the spray coming off the oar to be captured, frozen, mid-flight.
