Avalanche Territory

This is an example of one of those times that bringing my camera along turns out for the better. This was a hike to Chasm Lake on Longs Peak. Right towards the end, we went from hiking high wind, boulder-riddled terrain into the depression in the mountain formed by the lake. Now we were on steep, windy, snowy terrain. This guy was pretty adventurous, all by himself.

The hiker is the subject, clearly. He's standing about 1/3 of the way down the frame and 1/3 of the way in from the left-hand side. Imagine drawing a tic-tac-toe board on the picture. Two of the lines intersect right over him. This is called the rule of thirds and it helps with strong composition. There's a lot of negative space in this photo which, along with the rule of thirds, focuses the eye on the hiker.
